My baby can read

I have been teaching my daughter, now 2 years old, to read since she was 3 months old.  At 10 months old I was showing her a word book I had made for her.  When we got to the word "ear" she touched her ear before I even told her what the word was.  The next word was "pray".  She folded her hands to pray, once again, before I told her what the word was.  That was very exciting.  When your baby first demonstrates their ability to read, you won't soon forget it.  At the time, my daughter was not talking, so to see that she understood the words was just fascinating.

Since then, we have been doing a lot of reading.  She doesn't often offer to show me her ability.  She will read to me, and then when I try to capture it on film, she gets camera shy.  We continually play this game.  She reads to me.  I praise her.  I get the camera and ask her to read to me, and she is totally unwilling.

Imagine my surprise not too long ago when she read for me completely unprompted.  We were looking for a snack in the fridge and she was reaching towards something.  I asked her what she wanted and she pointed at the pack of Heluva Good cheese and said, "Good".  I was ecstatic!  I wonder what else she knows that she is keeping as a surprise for another day.

Just remember that nothing you say to your baby falls on deaf ears.  Have faith in your child's ability to learn new things and I promise they will amaze you.
