My Experience With a 10 Month Old
When I first learned that babies can read my fourth child was 10 months old. I was so excited because I just knew instinctively that this was true; babies can learn to read. I had always gone out of my way to teach my children as much as I could. I saw how much they could absorb and how smart they were. This was just a natural next step. After reading Glenn Doman's book How To Teach Your Baby To Read, I knew that there was so much more that I could do to give my children a strong start in life.

I busily set about making flash cards for my daughters. Unfortunately, as I held up my flash cards with as much excitement as a person could have, my daughter wouldn't even look at the words. I was disappointed, but only for a moment. I knew I had to come up with a way to make this work. I set out making books that showed the word first and then a picture. These were a huge success and soon I was consumed with creating new books for my daughters.
Which brings me to the point of this post for today. It is so awesome to watch the process of making brain connections in your child. I had been teaching my daughter the word broccoli. She had been reading the word and seeing the picture. Then one day I made her some broccoli. She was 10 months old and as she sat in her high chair I explained that this food I was giving her was broccoli. I ran and got her book and showed her the word and the picture. I could see in her eyes that she totally understood what was happening. First she read the word, then she saw what the word meant. Now she was getting to taste this item that she had been learning about. It was a huge moment for me to know that she was capable of understanding so much more than I might have giver her credit for. I could see that this journey to stimulate my child was going to be a grand adventure. She was unable to speak, yet she could fully understand.
I would love to hear your experiences too! Be sure to leave some comments.
