Teaching My Baby Colors

In the same way that I taught my 10 month old her shapes, I taught her colors.  I would take some different colored blocks and place them in front of her and tell her the colors.  I did not overwhelm her with a bunch of different colors at one time.  I had four colors and would tell her each one.  After a short while, I asked her to give me the green block, the red block, the yellow block and the blue block.  By golly, every one she knew.  It is so cool what little children can learn and how fast they learn it.

I remember sitting with my second child, before I knew all of this great stuff.  She was 2 years old and I was trying to teach her the colors. We were using M&M's and she kept getting them wrong.  Before we were done I was so frustrated because I felt she knew them but she wouldn't let on that she got it at all.  I think the difference here is that when you are dealing with preverbal children you have a giving spirit with them.  You can ask them questions and try to have them prove something, but if they don't we half expected them not to get it right anyway.  I think as parents we have more patience with them when they are younger.

Teaching your baby to recognize colors is a simple, daily process that can begin at birth.  It requires parents and caregivers to be descriptive in the communication and to name the colors.  For example, tell your baby you are feeding them with a yellow bowl, or they are wearing black shoes.  If you describe the colors around you to your child from the beginning there will never be a time that they don't know the colors and what they are called.  It is almost too easy.
