Can Babies Learn to Read Only With Flash Cards
Here is a question from a mom that wants to start teaching her baby to read.
Question
Hi! I am so excited to have found out about this group, and I apologize if this has been mentioned/asked but...I am really
wanting this to work but my 8 moth old will NOT sit for the videos
so I use flashcards from the Monkisee site. Is that really going
to do anything? Also working full time I do not get to do the "3 x
a day with at least 30 minutes between each set" part of the
program. My 8 month old will sit for a good 15 seconds before
crawling away and I try to get in what I can in that flash. Am I
totally wasting her time and just need to stop until she is older?
I so want this to work but I feel like I am not doing any justice.
Any suggestions would be welcomed. Please. Thank you.
Answer
Babies and small children have been learning to read with ONLY flash
cards for decades now and maybe longer. The videos are fairly new
and been out for about the last 10-12 years. So, yes your baby can
learn to read with flash cards only. Anything you show your baby is
going to stimulate their brain connections. This means nothing is
wasted. If your baby will only give you 15 seconds then you should
show however many cards you can before they crawl away. When babies
get active it is sometime better to show them the cards while they
are sitting in the highchair, in the bouncer seat, sitting in someone
else's lap or in the bathtub. You can show the cards when you are
done changing a diaper. I kept my stuff on my dresser, which was
loaded with materials, by the way. In the mornings when I would
change diapers I would show materials. Before noon we would get in
three sets and then the rest of the day was for other play. It helps
to keep your materials in a place that you know will be ideal to show
the words and then you are ready. You don't have to run and get the
flash cards out. I have also placed the cards around a room and held
the baby in my arms and gone looking for words. This is great for
active babies.

Laurie, the moderator of this group (Teach Your Baby to Read in 90 Seconds a Day)
will tell you that she showed her
children two sets of cards per day, 10 words, I believe and they are
reading now at some high grade level. Sorry, Laurie, I can't
remember the specifics.
I wouldn't worry about the 30 minutes in between. Everything is just
a guide so that the child thinks this game is fun. So here is my
suggestion, if possible.
When your baby wakes up, say good morning and then show a set of 5-10
words. They are usually in a good mood at this time so this is a
great teaching time. That takes less than 30 seconds.
Show the words after one diaper change.
If that is all you do in a day that is plenty.
If possible, show the baby the same words when they are sitting in
the highchair. There are your three sets right there. Change out
the words each week and begin a new set.
I hope this helps you.
