Your Baby Can Read Verses Monki See Monki Doo
There is an awful lot of buzz on the internet these days regarding Your Baby Can Read and if it really works. As a former user of Your Baby Can Read I will tell you that it does work. If you use the program consistently with your baby, your baby will learn to read. It is a very basic and simple program consisting mostly of the 5 dvds and then some flash cards. If you use the television anyway, this is a great addition to any baby's day. Your baby will see language and hear the language. Due to the rapid development of the brain that takes place during the first years of life, babies are able to decode the patterns of the language, thereby learning to read the words they are exposed to as well as new words that they figure out on their own.

The way this works is that babies, when exposed to a word continually and frequently, learn to read the word. Once again, due to the rapidly developing brain, there is no limit to the amount of words a baby can learn to read. Also, the more words your baby is exposed to, the faster and better they are able to decode the patterns of the language. What often happens is that when babies are exposed to language during the first year of their lives, they have figured out the patterns of the language before the age of 3 and therefore have no need to learn phonics because they have learned phonics in an organic manner. This does not mean that you cannot cover phonics if you feel it is necessary, but it is generally a review at this point for babies.
Parents that want to give their child a strong foundation in phonics can teach their babies to sight read using the phonic patterns. For example, you can choose to teach your baby a group of words all having the "an" sound in them such as tan, man, van, etc... I believe it is a bit more difficult to teach your baby to read according to the phonetic patterns unless you have first built a base using site reading. The two methods actually compliment each other when teaching reading to the very young.
Now let's look at the Your Baby Can Read system. The product is very basic, no bells or whistles. A word appears in large print on the screen, it is repeated two times and then some video is shown to reinforce the word being taught. It is very similar to a flash card and might even be considered just that, a video flash card.
The program, I believe will work best for a very young baby. Dr. Titzer, the creator recommends that your baby watch no other programming on television except for his series. This is one of the downfalls of the program. If your child has been exposed to other television programming, they may not be interested in Your Baby Can Read. It may be boring for them. If you are starting out with older children, they may not be interested in the Your Baby Can Read program at all.
Your Baby Can Read recommends their program for babies from 3 months old through 5 years old. When I purchased the dvds some years ago, I had a 3 year old and an infant. My infant was interested in the dvds, because he had seen no other programming, but my 3 year old had no interest in them at all.
I also found with the Your Baby Can Read dvds that my baby could watch Baby Einstein over and over again, but the same was not true with Your Baby Can Read. When I saw the simple format of the Your Baby Can Read videos, I began making my own videos for my baby. This was a huge part in his learning to read so many words.
I also let friends use the Your Baby Can Read dvds and many said that their babies would lose interest because the words appear on the screen too long.
I made lots of flash cards and books for my baby and we viewed them daily. He would watch Your Baby Can Read in the morning while I got my day started and then at diaper changes we would look at flash cards and books.
Although I like Your Baby Can Read, I felt that the product could be much better. I set out on a journey to create products that would teach babies to read in a fun and engaging manner. This was the beginning of Monki See Monki Doo. It has been a family affair as we have created each of our 3 videos. My children were the actors and the helpers behind the scenes. They have contributed to the music and even some of the poems. My four daughter and my niece sing the Monki See theme song and they have also come up with some of their own music for other volumes. We have created our videos using the elements that make babies love to watch a video again and again. We use puppets, poetry, music, toys, animals and children. We strive to make them silly and fun. If your baby loves Monki See and watches them again and again, they will serve their purpose and teach your baby to read and to recognize all sorts of things.
In comparing the two products, Your Baby Can Read and Monki See Monki Doo you will find many similarities but we believe, and our customers tell us that our series is full of fun, making them entertaining and educational, which makes learning for your baby fun. And after all, shouldn't it be?

You can also view our other website where we tell you exactly how to teach your baby to read. You will find lots of free information there.
