How long does it take to teach your baby to read?

Perhaps you are wondering how long it takes to really know that your baby can read.  Maybe you are starting out with an infant under 6 months old.  How do you know that the baby is learning and when will you be able to know for sure that your baby has been learning to read?

Any parent that begins on this fascinating journey of teaching their baby to read must have two things.  Two of the most important qualities that parents must bring to the program are patience and faith.

Patience is key here because you cannot expect that your baby will be reading in a week.  Yes, your baby is learning to read and may be able to identify words in that short a period of time, although that is probably the exception.  The outcome that we are aiming for when we begin a baby reading program that our babies will able to read everything and anything.  This does not happen in a month or two, although you are laying a great foundation for literacy in this short period of time.

It is extremely important for parents beginning a baby reading program to unselfishly stimulate their babies with written language. Just as we do not expect a newborn to speak, yet we speak to them, we must read to our babies, not expecting them to read back immediately.  There is a gestation period when teaching babies to read that must be respected or the program can fail miserably. During this time we are surrounding our babies with language in the written and spoken form.  It can take up to 6 months or more for a baby to demonstrate that they are indeed learning to read.

The truly wonderful part is that when they do prove that they have been learning, it is usually far more than we ever dreamed that they were capable of.   And this is where faith come in.  From the moment we meet our child we can sense in our innermost being that they are very smart and that they crave stimulation.  It our job as their parent to interact and bond with our babies as we teach them about the world around them.  We must have faith that this investment we are making in our child's life will pay off.

When you begin to teach your baby to read teach your baby to read, have faith in your baby that it is possible and there will be no limit to what they can achieve.
