Transforming Books For Baby to Read

The other day I decided that I was going to turn some of our favorite story books into reading books for my baby.  She actually isn't much of a baby anymore since she is 3.

I recently got Maisy Big, Masiy Small from the library and she loves it.  It is a book of opposites with bright, colorful illustrations.  She amazed me one day when she read every page of the book on her own.  It has a lot of pages.  Each page has two words on it similar to the title of the book.  She pointed to each word as she read them.  I was very excited for her and I have a video of her reading the book that I want to post here.

Well I decided that we should take some of our favorite children's stories and make them into reading books for her.  Unfortunately, most books have the pictures and the text on the same page.  It is better to have the text and the illustrations separated if we want to encourage our babies to read.

I thought I could photo copy the pictures and then write the words or print them out separately.  This didn't work too well.  First of all, each page is a different color.  If I photo copied 40 pages of pictures that would be a lot of ink.  Then I was facing the problem that the words were showing up on the pages I was copying.

This is where my 14 year old comes into the story.  I asked her if she could scan the page and remove the background and the words so I wouldn't have to print so much color for each picture.  She is taking the images into Photoshop and keeping only the image.  This is going to make it easy to put together a book for my 3 year old in the right format.

I am very excited to make more books in this format so we can focus on the words separately and without distractions.  I will post my new book here just as soon as it is finished.
