New Study Says Preschoolers Recognize Brands
A recent article in the March 2010 issue of Psychology and Marketing reveals that preschoolers and toddlers are able to recognize brands. Many people find this amazing because they just don't consider that a baby or young child can read and identify such things as brands. My thoughts are why not? Of course they are getting it. For the sake of this blog post I am not concerned with what this implies when our babies can identify different brands, but I am thrilled to have more evidence that babies and toddlers are taking this all in and they are able to read and recognize much more than we give them credit for.

When I heard this being discussed on the radio yesterday I was saying to myself, "Of course they can." Brands appear in large font, they are bold and bright and they capture a child's attention. After seeing these brands a few times they can read and recognize them anywhere.
I am not asking myself why are babies learning to identify brands? I am asking myself, "What else could we be teaching babies and preschoolers that would really benefit them if we had a plan for them?"
The answer is simple. At least I think so. Let's expose babies to language in this same manner and watch them develop into early readers. Let's introduce them to great literature and stimulate their little minds. Imagine what they can become with a little planning and direction?
Children learn many of these brands from television because television is a powerful tool that demands attention. If you walk into a room where a television is on, it is very hard to ignore. Why not use that same tool for educational purposes? By directing what plays on that box you can actually teach your baby to read before they even begin school. By purchasing some baby DVDs that teach babies to read, your baby can be learning to identify much more than brands. Your baby can learn to read the words that surround them on signs and billboards, in books and on labels.
Some people may ask the question, "Why should we teach a baby to read?" I would like to follow that up with this question,"Why not?" It is a skill they need and will use everyday for the rest of their lives.
