Adding Phonics to Your Baby Reading Program
Once you have been regularly teaching your baby to read, you can begin to add some word families and phonics flash cards to your baby reading program. This will help to reinforce the patterns of the language that your baby has naturally picked up from seeing many words. Although some parents are never concerned with phonics because their children learn it on their own, the introduction of patterns and rules will help to strengthen your baby's understanding of the rules of language.
Teaching your baby phonics is just as easy and fun as the sight-reading program you may be doing already. You will teach your baby in the same manner. You can flash the cards to your baby and then flip them over for the picture, or you can break up the sounds and then say them more quickly as you flip the cards over to reveal a picture.
You can access a huge library of Flesch Cards, named so by the generous Dad who created these based on the books by Rudolph Flesch. They have a word on one side and a picture on the other side. The font size is not very large, so these should be used with babies around 16 months and older. Just print out the files, cut them up and start showing them to your baby. You can access the files at www.mediafire.com/Fleshcards. There are even some instructions on how to use them available when you follow the link. I have been using them with my 3 year old and she is really enjoying them. Be warned, there are a lot and it may take you some time to get through them all.
