How to teach your baby to read sentences
If you have been teaching your baby to read single words you may have realized that it is pretty easy to do. You show your baby new words regularly and viola, they can read them. Now you may be wondering how you can introduce sentences to your baby in order to take their reading to the next level.
You can easily teach your baby to read full sentences in a few different ways.
Use a dry erase board or chalk board to write sentences for your baby to read.
Simply write sentences to your child and read them out loud as you point to each word. In this way your bay learns to read new words such as the, my, mine, would, should, etc. You can write sentences such as:
- I love you.
- You are a pretty girl.
- You are a handsome boy.
- Mommy likes to play with you.
You can just insert your child's name instead of saying you in the above examples.
Purchase sentence strips and write sentences for your baby.
At the office supply store you can purchase a pack of 100 sentence strips for about $5.00. These are great because they have lines on them which makes them easy to write on. You can stick your sentences in a pocket chart or tape them on the wall. Write out some sentences and read them out loud to your baby as you point to the words. Some examples of sentences you might write are:
- I like to eat waffles.
- I take my vitamins every day.
- I love my blanket.
- Mommy loves me.
Write sentences using words that your child is already familiar with but do not hesitate to add words that they do not know. They can learn many new words just by reading them in sentences.
Make a personalized story for your baby.
I have made tons of books for my babies to read. It has taken their reading to incredible levels. Visit this post - How to Make Your Own Reading Books to find out how you can easily make a personalized book for your baby.
Read to your baby while running your finger under each word.
While you read to your baby, point to each word. This allows babies to learn to read many new words and review some old words. Ask your baby to help you read short sentences from the stories you are reading.
