Book Review - I'd Really Like to Eat a Child

I recently requested some books from the library.  I love to read to my children and we always enjoy finding a new favorite book to read. All of the books I checked out were given 4 to 5 stars on Amazon so my hopes were kind of high that we would find some great books. The books that sticks out from all the books we have been reading is I'd Really Like to Eat a Child by Sylviane Donnio.

You can view it and its reviews on Amazon.  It comes highly recommended even though the title is a bit strange.  I don't often judge a book by its title because it can just be a clever way for the author to lure you in to the book.  Such was not the case with this book.

I'd Really Like to Eat a Child is one of the most upsetting books I have ever read.  This is the story of Achilles, a little crocodile who one day decides he wants to forgo anything his mother offers him to eat because he really wants to eat a child.  That part is not too bad but the story goes on to say that Achilles goes to the river bank and sees a girl.  He is quite excited to have a chance to eat a child.  As he approaches her and she sees how small he is she picks him up and tickles his belly and throws him in the river.  He comes home with great conviction to eat whatever his mama wants to feed him so he can get bigger, grow up and really eat a child.

Is it just me or is this horribly dark?  I have a big problem with this story.  I find no humor in it at all.  I live in Florida and am horrified when I hear reports of gators killing and eating children.  This really happens here and it is horrifying.  I can only imagine how tragic this is for the parents this happens to and to have a children's book written about it is like rubbing salt into their wounds.  There is nothing funny or comical or cute about animals attacking and killing people and to have it written and disguised as a cute bedtime story is even worse.  I need to call this book what it is, just plain terrible. I wonder what the author was thinking when she wrote it as well as the illustrator, the publisher and so on.

Maybe this is a book you enjoy.  I would love to hear your thoughts.  In my opinion it is an awful book.  This was the opinion of my older children as well before I even read the story to my 3 year old.

On a side note, as I was getting the link for this book from Amazon I just jotted down 17 more books that I would like to check out from the library.  I am forever hoping to find some great undiscovered books.
