How to Get Baby Interested in Reading Flash Cards

Question
I am feeling as I am not having any progress with my just turned 2 yr old. He loves the 1st MonkiSee dvd Baby's First Words , but he would rather play with the cards and look at the pictures rather than the word. I was wondering if you have any tips or ideas. Thanks!

Answer
Thanks for the email.  Are you saying that you need help in getting him interested in the flash cards?  If so, let me remind you that flash card learning is meant to be very QUICK!  I say that especially for him, if he wants to play with the cards.  You can teach him to read the words, without even showing him the pictures.  It should not be any problem for him as far as understanding the words if he is watching the video and has seen the pictures before.  I would suggest that you get 5-7 cards and show them to him as quickly as you can say each word.  It would be best to do this when he is contained in a way where he will not grab the cards from you.  Perhaps when he is in his highchair with his hands busy.  You could sit in front of him and quickly say each word.  Just look to see if he is looking.  There is a light label with each word on the back of each MonkiSee flash card. That is for you to use so you can show the cards fast.  If 7 cards is too many and he is looking away bring the set down a bit.  If you can do this 2-3 times a day for 5-7 days, and it literally should take less than 30 seconds, you will be making great progress.  If he has watched the video a lot and doesn't want to read the cards, it may be that he knows them already and wants to see new words.  You can try introducing new words as well.  Have you taught him to read his name and things that he loves?  This is usually very helpful.  We have lots of recommendations and ideas for teaching babies to read on our Guide to Teaching Babies to Read.

Here are some ways and times to show a baby flash cards.

  • While they are in the highchair
  • While they are in the tub
  • At the change table, once they are clean, of course
  • In their car seat before or after going out

You can also play games withe the flash cards.  Set them around the house and go on a word hunt with your baby.  Speak to your baby and ask them if they can help you find the word, so and so.  Do this with 5-10 cards and see if they can help you point out the words you are learning.  If they cannot, just say each card as you look for them together.  Get magnets for the fridge and hang the flash cards up there and then carry baby over and point to each word.  You can change the order for the next showing.  Play tag with the word cards.  Place a word across the room and see if baby can run, walk or crawl over to it and tag the word or bring it back to you.  The idea is to have fun with language.

And lastly, include lots of reading to your baby.  Choose books that baby likes and read them as you point out the words.  The new MonkiSee See and Say Books are designed to teach babies to read while they are being read to.  The words and pictures are separated to naturally draw the child's attention to the words they are hearing.  These are really great tools for teaching babies to read because they can learn to read straight from books.
