Can babies learn to read and speak at the same time?
Question
My daughter is 2 years old and has just now begun to talk really well. I have used Monkisee, Your Baby Can Read and Your Child Can Read, and Tweedlewink programs with her as well as ABC flash cards. I have noticed that as she is talking while using the flash cards she is also reading. Is it possible that learned to talk and read at the same time?
Answer
Thanks for your question, Kim. What most likely has happened is that your daughter has been reading silently for some time, and now that she has the ability to speak, she is showing you that she can read by reading out loud. It is much easier for babies to read silently than orally, due to the time it takes for speech to develop.
Congratulations, this is quite an accomplishment. My son did the same thing. At 12 months of age, he began reading single words out loud just as he was learning to say them. He was definitely reading prior to that, but I just wasn't aware of it.
This is a very exciting time for both of you. I would like to encourage you to read to her a lot while pointing to the words as you read. Start with some simple books, such as the Maisy books. The text is fairly large and the picture is on the opposite side in many of the Maisy books. You can fold the book in half while you focus on the text and then observe the illustration. The Little Bear books are also very nice first readers.
It is essential to have books that are formatted to keep text and illustrations separate. This naturally directs the child's attention to the words without having an illustration competing for their attention. MonkiSee has just released two See and Say Stories, Know Your Monkey and Monkeys Like the Color . These stories teach children to read while being read to. These are wonderful books to read to children, because they teach the child to read as well.
