Should you teach your baby to read?
With all the infomercials these days about teaching babies to read, parents may be wondering if this is something they should do. After all, the claims are that it is easy, takes just minutes a day, and babies love it. Is there any truth to this?
I read a mother's post in a forum regarding this subject. She said that her husband had seen the infomercials about teaching babies to read and he was excited to begin with their baby. The mother was the one who was hesitant. She did not go for it right away. Finally her husband convinced her. Her reservations were, what if it doesn't work, to which he countered, what if it does? If it doesn't, then we are out the money we spent for the program, but if it works, it is worth every penny. Her baby, in fact, did learn to read and is learning to speak at least 3 languages. She is a full-time working mom who found it very easy to teach her baby to read.
You might be wondering as well if there is any truth to the claim that babies can learn to read. I have seen firsthand that they can. I have taught my own to read, as well as spoken to countless others that have successfully taught their babies to read. What they will all tell you is that it did not require a lot of time. Flash card teaching literally takes minutes a day, or less. The videos are fun for the babies to watch, so instead of having them entertained with mindless junk, parents can actually use the television as a tutor that will teach their babies to read.
I don't know about you, but I know that I embrace the television with my babies. I often need some uninterrupted time to take a shower, talk to my husband, or homeschool the other children. Being able to put on dvds that actually teach my baby a necessary skill, such as reading, is a dream. These were not available when I began to have children, but how I wish they were! My older children would have definitely learned to read if we had access to programs like these. I realized when my first baby was 3 months old that the television could be a real aid for me. Since my baby screamed when she was set down I could either listen to her scream while I cooked dinner, or turn on Sesame Street. Guess which one I chose?
