Flash Card Magic
Teaching babies to read with flash cards is effective, easy and fun. There are many different things you can do to make flash card sessions into a game that your baby will enjoy. For more ideas I suggest you read through past posts here or check out A Guide to Teaching Babies to Read. The guide is an 80 minute DVD that gives parents and educators an overview of how babies learn to read, what they can do to help them learn to read and how to make it fun for the child and the parent.
Of all the methods there are to teach babies to read, I have found the MonkiSee flash cards to be the most effective and my personal favorite. I think the reason for this is that they take seconds to show to the baby. The baby is interacting with me and the flash cards and I can see the light bulb going off in the baby's head. I have found that within a week or less, depending on the child, they have learned to read all the words I am presenting. This can range from 10 words to 50 or more words.
Currently we are learning about nouns and the definition of a noun. I have a stack of 60 flash cards on my desk. I have shown them to my 4 year old about 5 times and she knows at least 50 of the words. There are about 5 that she sounds out and may need a little help with. All I can say is, "Amazing!" If I had to choose just one method, this would be it. This does not mean that I do not love videos and books that accomplish the same goal of teaching my babies to read, but flash cards are my favorite. I feel like flash cards are a magical way of teaching babies to read. What they learn and how quickly they learn never ceases to amaze me.
