Best Books to Teach Baby to Read

I began teaching my first child to read over 12 years ago.  I started teaching the older girls when they were 3 years old and the last bunch I started to teach when they were infants and babies.  I have discovered that it is much easier to teach them as babies.  They learn faster and they are better readers.  It is amazing to see how quickly they are able to learn to read.

One of the keys to being successful in teaching your baby to read is to keep lots of short books around.  You might think that some very simple, short books are below your child, but let me assure you, they are not intimidating to a new reader.  It is very important to have a wide selection of books around for your baby to read. Have plenty of easy readers available for your baby to pick up and start reading.  It is also important to have more advanced books on hand that you read to your baby.

The other day I was doing laundry and my 4 year old plopped herself down on the floor on her tummy in front of the bookshelf.  She picked up some easy books and proceeded to read about 5 books to herself.  For many parents this is a dream come true.  It was for this mommy too.  I have observed my children and even myself.  If I open up a book and the pages are loaded with text, I will cast it aside to read a shorter book.  We don't always do that, but the majority of the time, my kids will willingly begin to read books that are short and sweet, while they may avoid pages that are full of text.

They love to listen to stories and they love to be read to, but as for the books they will choose to read again and again, make them short and easy.  They will graduate to longer stories, but it is crucial that parents don't burn them out on long stories, insisting they read pages full of words.  If your child is demonstrating tiredness or lack of interest in reading to you, take over and read to them or pick up shorter books.  Remember, we are striving to create a love of reading in our kids.  Provide lots of content and follow their lead.  Reinforcing their reading skills on short, easy books will give them the confidence they need to read more advanced books on their own.
