How to Determine Your Baby or Child's Reading Level

How do you determine your baby or child's reading level?  This is a question you may have wondered.  Many parents that are teaching their babies to read are curious to know what grade level their child is reading at.  I myself have wondered this, so I decided to share my findings here.

There are several websites you can visit to begin to determine what level your baby or child is capable of reading at. This link,  Reading Level Assessment, will provide you with word lists to help you place your child's reading at a certain grade level.

The San Diego Quick Reading Assessment also offers word lists that determine a child's reading level up to grade 11.

A couple other very helpful websites are AR Bookfinder and Scholastic Book Wizard.  These two websites allow you to type in book titles and they reveal the reading level for each book.

Just remember, especially when dealing with babies and young children, they possibly can decode many large and complicated words, but this does not always reveal their comprehension level.  Developing an advanced comprehension level may require more time than just developing the ability to read.

Thanks to my friends on the Brillkids Forum for sharing this with me.
