The Christian Mother Goose Big Book
I recently purchased The Christian Mother Goose Big Book by Marjorie Ainsborough Decker from Amazon. I got a used copy for couple dollars plus shipping. The copy I purchased cost me about $6.00 in total.
I was really curious to see this book because it was recommended by another mom on the Brillkids forum. She mentioned that this is a favorite book of her daughter. Being a huge nursery rhyme/poetry lover, I decided I had to purchase it. This decision was made only after I could not secure a copy from my local library. I have been eager to receive this book to see if it was worthy of praise. The verdict is in. I love it! I received it Saturday, opened it immediately and began to read the lovely, uplifting rhymes. Many if not all of the rhymes are modified versions of the classic nursery rhymes we all know and love. Each has been cleverly reworked to include lessons of faith and Christian virtue.
The problem with some nursery rhymes is that they are nasty. I realized this as I sang Rock A Bye, Baby to my first child. What a terrible song! The idea to recreate these Mother Goose rhymes into positive faith building renditions is brilliant in my opinion. I am so glad we made this purchase and I know we will be reading this book for many years to come. Here are a few examples from the book.
Little Boy Blue
Little Boy Blue,
Come blow your horn,
The sheep's in the stable
Where the Savior is born.
Where is the boy
Who looks after the sheep?
Watching Baby Jesus,
Fast asleep.
I Had a Little Sycamore Tree
I had a little sycamore tree,
And what did I see in there?
A little man from Jericho
Sat perched up in the air!
The King of Heaven's Great Son
Stopped, and came to visit me;
And all for the sake
Of the man up in my tree!
There Was An Old Woman
There was an old woman
Who lived in a shoe.
She had so many children,
And loved them all, too.
She said, "Thank you, Lord Jesus,
For sending them bread,"
Then kissed them all gladly
And sent them to bed.
