Babies are born with this fascinating ability to learn language.  They are the world's best students.  They have a tremendous desire to learn all they can.  They are inquisitive and tireless in figuring things out and how they work. It is during this period that parents should introduce reading and foreign language to their babies.

A strong love for reading is carefully developed during this period by a parent's attitude for books and reading. Parents that share this love with their children raise children that really enjoy reading.  Children that are read to develop strong vocabularies, great imaginations, and an understanding of how written language functions.  All of these lead the child through the process of becoming a strong, independent reader.  Exposure to language through books should be introduced as early as possible, preferably during the child's first year of life.

It is not impossible to teach a baby to read during this process.  It is actually very simple to do.  Babies do not learn to read the same way a 1st grader learns to read.  The lessons are not formal or long.  Parents can introduce written language and reading skills to their baby as early as 3 months of age.  This is done through short, quick sessions involving flash cards, dvds, books or computer programs.  All of these tools present written words in a large, clear font without any other distractions.  The baby's attention is drawn to the words and this allows the baby's brain to memorize the words while picking up the patterns in the words.  This leads to reading from memory and then reading using phonics which were learned indirectly.
